Hospital discharge is a process you’d go through as you’re allowed or have to leave the facility for going home or being referred to another post-op facility. When the hospital evaluates you no longer needing inpatient care, they would discharge you and you may go home. However, hospitals may find the evaluation requires them to refer you to another facility to extend the care and they would also discharge you. The discharge planner is the functionary usually pointed by the hospital to arrange your discharge process.

After a surgical procedure, you’d receive a set of guidelines for post-operative care. In general, post-op care would include wound care and pain management with various instruments like medication, therapy, etc. Furthermore, post-operative care also refers to extended care at home or at a recovery facility. This widened post-operative care covers the support to main treatments and helps for other tasks. For example, some post op service providers help you with the discharge process, prescription pickup, private post-op care, and so forth.

The post-operative period would typically be counted as 90 days following the surgery day for major surgical procedures. The day of surgery, even though there are still several hours to the end of the day, is actually not counted in the post-operative period. For example, if you take the surgical procedure on September 11th, then September 12th is your first postoperative day while September 10th is your pre-operative day.
